Students Commemorate Jerusalem Day

School students in Israel mark Jerusalem Day with joy and festivities

Yom Yerushalayim (Jerusalem Day) is observed on the 28th of Iyar and commemorates the reunification of Jerusalem during the 1967 Six-Day War, when Israeli forces gained control of East Jerusalem and the Old City, including the Western Wall. First observed in 1968, the day has become both a national and religious occasion, reflecting Jerusalem’s central place in Jewish history, identity, and faith.

The day is marked by festive prayers and services of thanksgiving, ceremonies at the Western Wall, educational programs, concerts, and public celebrations throughout Jerusalem and across Israel. One of the most prominent events is the annual Flag March through the streets of Jerusalem and the Old City. State ceremonies are also held to honor the soldiers who fought in the Six-Day War and those who contributed to Jerusalem’s reunification.

Students at the Tal Chaim School in Jerusalem, some of whom are supported by Chamah through its subsidized school meal program, took part in the festivities and a flag march to commemorate this special day. ■
