Celebrating the Shavuos Holiday

Bringing the holiday joy to those in need

Shavuot is a major Jewish holiday that commemorates the giving of the Torah at Mount Sinai over 3000 years ago. In honor of the Shavuot holiday, Chamah distributed food care packages to people in need so they could celebrate with dignity and joy.

The special packages also included traditional dairy cakes and sweets, reflecting the holiday’s custom. Many packages were also delivered to single mothers, who Chamah supports throughout the year through special programs and ongoing assistance.

Shavuot commemorates the giving of the Torah at Mount Sinai, one of the defining moments in Jewish history. The holiday is also associated with gratitude for the harvest season and the blessings of the land. Many Jewish families celebrate by attending synagogue services, studying Torah, gathering with family and friends, and enjoying traditional dairy foods.

One of the most widely known Shavuot traditions is eating dairy foods. According to Jewish tradition, after the Torah was given at Mount Sinai, the Jewish people learned the laws of kosher food preparation and were unable to immediately prepare meat according to those requirements. Dairy foods therefore became associated with the holiday and remain a cherished custom to this day. ■
