Marking WWII Victory Day

Commemorating the Allied victory in Europe over Nazi Germany in 1945

May 9th marks the Allied victory in Europe over Nazi Germany and honors those who sacrificed their lives fighting in World War II. Commemorations were held at the Chamah centers in Israel and Russia.

Among Chamah’s members and beneficiaries are veterans and survivors of the war, men and women who endured persecution, fought back against the Nazis under brutal conditions, survived against all odds, and went on to persevere and rebuild their lives, with many eventually immigrating to Israel.

In much of Europe and the United States, Victory in Europe Day is observed on May 8. The difference in dates stems from the German surrender ceremonies at the end of the war. An initial surrender document was signed in Reims, France, on May 7, 1945. A second ceremony with a revised surrender document took place near Berlin late on May 8, when it was already May 9 in Moscow due to the time difference. ■
