Meals for those in need in Ofakim, Israel

Continued support for many families in the area that was so ruthlessly attacked on October 7th

Chamah continues to deliver cooked, nutritious meals to families in need and families of Israeli soldiers in the brave and courageous town of Ofakim, in the south of Israel.

Since the outbreak of this devastating war, the Chamah Center in Kiryat Malachi, which is located near many southern Israeli towns, has been working tirelessly, alongside our regular programs, to assist those who have been affected by the war. This includes food boxes, baby supplies, pre-loaded debit cards, and toys for impoverished families, immigrants, and the elderly. The town of Ofakim was especially hard hit, with many killed or taken captive. Chamah is assisting hundreds of families and seniors there, providing support to ease their burden during these challenging times.

October 7th is a day the residents of Ofakim will never forget. The town faced the harrowing terrorist infiltration and endured the tragic loss of over fifty lives.

But amidst the tragedy, stories of heroism emerged. Off-duty soldiers, police officers, and ordinary civilians bravely intervened to prevent further devastation. Outnumbered and armed only with handguns, they faced numerous terrorists equipped with automatic rifles and RPGs. Fierce gun battles erupted around the city as the Israeli counter-terrorism unit fought tirelessly to regain control. One of the volunteers preparing and distributing meals is the father of one of the police officers who heroically battled the terrorists and was killed in action on that fateful day.

One notable news event from Ofakim involves a couple in their 60s, Rachel and David Edry (Edri), who were held captive in their home by Hamas militants during the large-scale invasion from the Gaza Strip. The ordeal lasted approximately 20 hours and ended with their successful rescue by Israeli security forces.

Rachel Edry, who speaks Arabic, managed to placate the terrorists who invaded her home with food and drink, showing them great hospitality. The militants, very hungry, accepted her offer and holed up in the Edrys' home and did not harm the couple, until Israeli soldiers surrounded the area and eventually rescued them.

Following the incident, Rachel Edry became a national icon in Israel, symbolizing resilience and courage in the face of adversity. Her story was widely circulated in the media, inspiring various forms of artistic expression and becoming a part of popular culture.
