Honoring a Fallen Defender of Israel
School students in Israel mark Remembrance Day by learning about the life and legacy of an IDF hero
“Adopt a Fallen Hero” is an educational initiative that brings the stories of courageous soldiers from the Israel Defense Forces who gave their lives defending Israel into elementary schools.

The program gives students a deeply personal connection to these stories. Watching interviews with the soldier’s family allows the children to learn about the person behind the uniform – his life, his character, and the values that guided him. Rather than encountering history as distant facts, students hear directly from those who knew and loved him, allowing his story to take on real meaning.
This year, the Tal Chaim School in Jerusalem, supported by Chamah through its subsidized school meal program for children, took part in this important initiative. The school chose to honor and remember the late Lieutenant Colonel Aviram (Avraham) Chariv, who fell in combat in southern Lebanon on 20 Tishrei 5785, October 22, 2024.

In honor of Yom HaZikaron, Israel’s Memorial Day for fallen soldiers and victims of terror, students at Tal Chaim School gathered to watch the interview with Aviram’s family. As they listened, the story of a brave young soldier was no longer an abstract idea, but the story of a life lived with courage, dedication, and purpose.
This program of remembrance helps ensure that the lives of these heroes continue to shape the next generation. By learning about the qualities that defined Aviram’s life, students are encouraged to carry those same values forward, allowing his legacy to remain a living source of inspiration in their own lives and communities. ■
