Empowering Retreat for Widows in Israel
Retreat in Israel brings together widows for a weekend of camaraderie and support, with an exciting program offering inspiration and a chance to connect
In August, around eighty widows embarked on a journey that went beyond a simple break, providing a powerful avenue for healing, empowerment, and unforgettable memories.
The widows enjoyed a 3-day weekend retreat, finding inspiration and comfort through shared experiences and supportive connections. Among them were some who were recently widowed, wives of IDF soldiers who fell in the Gaza war.
Thursday the widows went down south to visit the city of Ofakim and heard stories of faith and courage from October 7th, and they also had the opportunity to meet with the famous Rachel Edri, who was held captive in her home by Hamas militants during the large-scale invasion from the Gaza Strip.
They then headed to Kibbutz Re'im, visiting the memorial at the site of those who were brutally killed at the Nova Music Festival.
The younger group went to Jerusalem, where they had excursions into the old city and other spots in Jerusalem, along with a special BBQ evening in the Mamilla neighborhood along with a concert. The older age group enjoyed a lovely Shabbat held at the Chamah Center in Kiryat Malachi; together with the theme of the month of Elul they discussed this time of reflection and introspection for the soul.
Over the course of the weekend and on Shabbat there were delicious meals, workshops, lectures and more, along with uplifting and inspiring talks, songs and camaraderie, with a soulful musical performance after the ending of Shabbat.
The widows all immensely enjoyed the time together and support the retreat offered. In the face of life's challenges, after the loss of a husband, the impact of this retreat extended beyond a mere break. It became a powerful avenue for healing and empowerment. ■
* Rachel Edry is the daughter of parents who immigrated from Iran and speaks Arabic. On October 7th, she managed to placate the terrorists who invaded her home with food and drink. The militants, very hungry, accepted her offer and holed up in the Edrys' home and did not harm the couple, until Israeli soldiers surrounded the area. The ordeal lasted approximately 20 hours and ended with their successful rescue by Israeli security forces. Following the incident, Rachel Edry became a national icon in Israel, symbolizing resilience and courage in the face of adversity. Her story was widely circulated in the media, inspiring various forms of artistic expression and becoming a part of popular culture.
