Sweet Traditions for Chanukah
Children at the Chamah Center in Russia commemorate the Chanukah holiday
At the Chamah Child Development Center in Moscow, children celebrated Chanukah by decorating and savoring their own donuts, connecting to a cherished tradition with joy and creativity.
The custom of eating sufganiyot, or donuts, on Chanukah commemorates the miracle of the oil that burned for eight days. This miracle occurred over 2,000 years ago during the time of the Maccabees, a courageous group of Jewish fighters who reclaimed the Holy Temple in Jerusalem from Greek oppressors. When they rededicated the Temple, they discovered only a single cruse of oil—enough to light the menorah for just one day. Miraculously, it lasted eight days, providing the time needed to prepare more. This event, symbolizing the triumph of faith, is celebrated every year during Chanukah.
By enjoying foods fried in oil, we celebrate this miracle in a deliciously tangible way—especially when it’s paired with the excitement of decorating your own treats. This festive activity brought smiles to the children’s faces, blending tradition with fun and flavor. ■
