Brothers' New Start: From Near the Gaza Border to a New Community

How the School Nutrition Program at a school in Jerusalem helped two brothers who relocated from the conflict zone in a town near Gaza

Until the tragic events of October 7th, Yossi and Avi enjoyed a peaceful life with their parents in Ashkelon. Their immigrant parents worked diligently in factories to support their beloved sons, aged seven and nine, in their modest fourth-floor apartment.

On October 7th 2023, (Simchat Torah morning), sirens jolted the family awake, forcing them to seek refuge in the neighborhood bomb shelter. The relentless alarms soon revealed that this was no ordinary situation, but a full-scale Hamas attack on southern Israel. After days of intense fear, the family had to evacuate, relocating to the Ihr Ganim neighborhood of Jerusalem.

At Tal Chaim Mofet school in Ihr Ganim, Jerusalem, Yossi and Avi joined the second and fourth grades respectively. The school warmly welcomed the boys, embracing them as part of their community and providing a supportive environment. They were also integrated into the school's nutritional support program, offering nutritious breakfast and lunch meals.

This initiative serves a dual purpose: not only does it provide the essential nourishment needed for the children to stay focused and engaged in their studies, but it also fosters a sense of stability and care. The consistent meals and attention from the school staff played a crucial role in helping the boys adapt and thrive in their new surroundings, promoting both physical well-being and a reassuring sense of belonging.

The Chamah Nutritional Support Program at the Tal Chaim Mofet school in Ihr Ganim, Jerusalem, provides many children in need, like Yossi and Avi, with essential meals. By ensuring access to nutritious food, the program supports their growth and overall well-being, allowing them to concentrate on their studies. This helps to alleviate some of the daily struggles faced by these families, enabling them to focus on education and personal development.

Moreover, the program plays a crucial role in fostering a supportive and nurturing environment for these young students, aiding them in achieving their academic goals and becoming successful citizens. For many, it also plays a significant role in breaking the cycle of poverty within their families. ■
