Leir

Henry J. Leir, who built a leading commodities trading firm and became a dedicated philanthropist after selling his company in 1968, passed away on the summer of 1998.

Mr. Leir was born in Germany, entered the metals and mining business in that country, where he worked his way up.

In 1933, he fled Nazi Germany for Luxembourg, where he continued his career in metals and trading. Five years later, he left for the United States, where he established the Continental Ore Corporation.

After selling his company he became involved with philanthropy. For over 15 years, Mr. Leir was a generous supporter and friend of Chamah contributing to programs benefiting underprivileged children.

We at Chamah have very special memories of the late Mr. Leir and his willingness to help the needy. It was a privilege having his friendship and he will surely be missed.
